China & the Test of Hearts
Summary: In the near future, children that wish to are given the option of having sibling robot companions as well as robotic friends but China, even though she is an only child and has often felt alone, has never wished to pursue that kind of companionship. However, when China discovers that one of her parents has a terminal heart condition and she stumbles upon an AI companion who has a new enhanced emotional component, she decides that AI might be able to help her family in ways that nature and medicine can’t and so, she agrees to participate and quickly enlists the help of her new robotic sibling companion in an attempt to improve her mother’s quality of life and to help around the home. Throughout their exploration of what can bring comfort to a human life and how they can support a human heart in need as they attempt to fulfil China's mother's bucket list, try to help her to fulfil some of her dreams and assist her to realize some of her life long wishes, the two must learn some of the limits and some of the differences between human beating hearts and functional emotional programs. Due to the complexity of their task, China must also teach her new robotic friend what being part of a human family really means, what human love really is and how powerful human love can really be and as they embark upon their quest, China hopes that her new companion may just provide some forms of robotic human love and practical support that might just be more powerful and helpful to her mother than China’s own human love and human heart alone.
